Proctoring for Hiring: Smarter Fraud Detection in Remote Assessments
As hiring continues to evolve in a remote-first world, ensuring the integrity of candidate assessments is more than a compliance concern—it’s essential to making confident, high-quality hiring decisions. Organizations are increasingly vulnerable to fraudulent behaviors like impersonation, unauthorized assistance, and other forms of cheating that can compromise hiring outcomes.
At Harver, we’re committed to upholding the highest standards of fairness, accuracy, and trust in the assessment process.
That’s where proctoring comes in as the latest enhancement to our fraud detection capabilities. This feature leverages photographic and behavioral data to monitor candidate activity during assessments, helping you verify identities, flag suspicious behavior, and make more confident hiring decisions.
Why It Matters
In a world where remote assessments are the norm, ensuring test integrity is more important than ever. Proctoring adds a critical layer of trust and transparency to your hiring process by:
- Detecting Anomalies in Real Time: Identify behaviors like switching tabs, multiple faces in view, or extended inactivity.
- Reducing Risk of Fraud: Prevent impersonation and other dishonest tactics that can skew assessment results.
- Improving Hiring Confidence and Quality: Make smarter decisions based on verified, trustworthy assessment results that reflect a candidate’s true capabilities.
- Supporting Better Fit and Long-Term Success: By ensuring fair, undistorted results, Proctoring helps surface candidates who genuinely meet role requirements—leading to stronger hires.
- Maintaining a Seamless Candidate Experience: Proctoring runs quietly in the background, ensuring a smooth and respectful process for candidates.

Who Should Be Thinking About Proctoring
While Proctoring strengthens any hiring process, it’s especially impactful in scenarios where candidate verification is difficult or where assessment integrity is critical. If your team is navigating high volumes, global hiring, or sensitive roles, this feature can provide much-needed peace of mind.
- Talent Acquisition teams hiring at scale, who need consistent and fair assessments across high volumes.
- Organizations in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and government, where compliance and verification are essential.
- Teams hiring for remote or hybrid roles, especially across borders or in offshore markets, where in-person identity verification may not be as feasible.
- Recruiters focused on early-career or entry-level roles, where test-sharing and impersonation risks can be more prevalent.
- Employers committed to fairness and reducing bias, who want to ensure every candidate is evaluated on a level playing field.
Whether you’re hiring for technical skill, customer service acumen, or leadership potential, Proctoring gives you clearer insight into who your candidates really are—so you can hire with greater precision and confidence. In short, if you’re hiring in a way that prioritizes scale, security, or fairness—Proctoring isn’t just helpful. It’s essential.
How It Works
Once enabled, Proctoring consists of three main parts.
- Periodic Photo Capture: By taking photos of candidates at intervals during their assessment, recruiters can verify the identity of the individual taking the assessment to ensure it’s the same person who is interviewed and hired.
- Copy-Paste Prevention: Restrict the ability to cut, copy, and paste text within the candidate’s assessment to significantly complicate the use of external tools like ChatGPT.
- Focus Change Detection: Monitor when a candidate switches browser tabs, windows, or interacts with other apps on their computer to alert recruiters of frequent changes.

Each of these features plays a key role in protecting assessment accuracy, giving hiring teams reliable data to evaluate candidate fit and potential.
All detected behaviors are reported on the Candidate Detail Page, giving your hiring team a clear, actionable summary of any suspicious activity so you can follow up with confidence.
